Gyanendra's plea for tax waiver rejected; to pay dues

Kathmandu, Jan 6 (PTI) Nepal government has ordered deposed king Gyanendra to clear all outstanding financial dues since the abolition of monarchy in May 2008 as it rejected his plea for tax waiver on his personal and family property, including utility bills, a top minister said today.

64-year-old Gyanendra vacated the royal palace in the heart of the capital in June 2008, two weeks after the 601-member Constituent Assembly's abolished the monarchy.

Gyanendra, who is believed to have extensive business interests, will now have to pay tax for the first time as the Cabinet yesterday rejected his plea for tax waiver on his personal and family property, including utility bills.

The government asked the former king to clear all outstanding dues, including electricity, telephone and water bills. Outstanding dues and tax liabilities will cost the former monarch a whopping Rs. 200 million, according to sources.
